Global Training & Deep Expertise

Dr. Auladell’s journey began in Barcelona, Spain, where she earned her DDS and MDS (Certificate in Orthodontics) from top institutions: the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). Later, she completed a Certificate in Orthodontics at the Georgia School of Orthodontics and practiced extensively before relocating to Austin to call it home.

Research & Evidence-Based Care

Dr. Auladell doesn’t just practice orthodontics—she advances it. Her peer-reviewed research has focused on skeletal anchorage systems and open-bite correction, including morphological dental changes following intrusion with mini-plates.
For you as a patient, this means she designs treatment plans grounded in the latest science—aiming for precision, long-term stability, greater comfort, and better overall outcomes.

Kids with Sensory Sensitivities

5 Holiday Tips for Kids with Sensory Sensitivities

Holiday dental care tips for kids with sensory sensitivities. Help your child maintain a bright, healthy smile with gentle, sensory-friendly routines and tools – Bee Cave Orthodontics – Austin, Texas

The holidays can be a magical time for families, filled with gatherings, treats, and festive routines. However, for children with sensory sensitivities, this time of year can bring challenges – from overwhelming noises to new food textures. Keeping up with dental care and oral health can feel particularly difficult. Here are five practical and gentle tips to help your child maintain a bright and healthy smile during the busy holiday season.

1. Keep a Calm and Predictable Routine

Why it matters: Children with sensory sensitivities thrive on routine. The holidays can disrupt familiar schedules, which might lead to stress and resistance when it’s time to brush or floss.
Tip:

  • Stick to regular brushing and flossing times, even during travel or busy days.
  • Use a visual schedule or timer to prepare your child for their dental care routine.
  • Bring familiar tools like a favorite toothbrush, soft music, or a weighted blanket to create a calm environment.

2. Choose the Right Tools and Textures

Why it matters: Some kids may be sensitive to the texture or pressure of traditional toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Tip:

  • Opt for soft-bristled toothbrushes and non-foaming, fluoride-free toothpaste with gentle flavors.
  • Let your child pick out their own toothbrush – bright colors, soft grips, or character-themed options can make the experience more positive.
  • Electric toothbrushes with adjustable speeds can help reduce discomfort while improving cleaning efficiency.

3. Handle Holiday Treats with Care

Why it matters: Sticky, hard, or sugary holiday treats can be difficult for children with oral sensitivities and can increase the risk of cavities.
Tip:

  • Offer soft, smile-friendly snacks like yogurt, fruit slices, and tender baked goods instead of candy canes or caramel.
  • Keep a water bottle nearby to encourage rinsing after snacks or meals.
  • If sugary treats are unavoidable, enjoy them with meals when saliva production naturally helps clean teeth.

4. Make Dental Care Fun and Rewarding

Why it matters: Positive reinforcement can encourage kids to embrace dental routines, especially during stressful times.
Tip:

  • Turn toothbrushing into a game with their favorite holiday song as a timer.
  • Use reward systems like sticker charts or small prizes to celebrate consistent brushing habits.
  • Read books or watch videos about dental care with characters they relate to.

5. Be Mindful of Sensory Overload

Why it matters: Holiday activities – bright lights, loud sounds, and crowded spaces – can be overwhelming for kids with sensory sensitivities. This can make them resist tasks like brushing teeth.
Tip:

  • Create quiet, dimly lit spaces where your child can relax before bedtime and dental routines.
  • Use noise-canceling headphones or soft music to minimize overstimulation.
  • Keep oral hygiene time short, gentle, and predictable to avoid unnecessary stress.
